Description
Pre-Columbian, Panama, Conte, ca. 600 to 800 CE. This olla has beautiful and clear swirling geometric designs in cream, blue, red, and black, on the body of the jar, and banding in those colors around the neck and lip. The Conte period represents an explosion of artistic creativity in Panamanian ceramics and this piece has all the hallmarks of creativity, including the strong use of the blue color. Size: 7-1/2"L x 7-1/2"W x 8-3/4"H.
Provenance: Ex-private Rousseau collection, Durango, CO, acquired before 1984.

Condition
There is very little wear to the decoration on the olla, and the artwork is very clear, even the blue color which generally does not hold up as well as the red. There may have been very slightly repairs to the bottom of the base but otherwise there is no evidence for cracks or repairs.
