Native American, Southwestern United States, Anasazi / Ancestral Puebloan, ca. 900 to 1300 CE. A stunning coil-formed pottery olla with an avian and geometric motif. The olla rests on a rounded but stable base that supports a wide, spherical body, rounded shoulders with a tapered neck, and a thin rim overhanging the deep basin. This polychrome water jar bears a striking design, slip painted, in red and black, onto a white ground. The motifs consist of a stylized bird with a diamond shaped body, linear legs, and a crested head in profile, perhaps a species of roadrunner. The geometric motifs are seemingly randomly placed around the rest of the bowl and consist of zigzag and Z shaped lines encircled by heavy borders. Undoubtably this striking and bold design represents symbolic meaning for the tribe or artist. A lovely example replete with four piercings on the rim for suspension.
