Item Details
Description
(CHINA - BUDDHISM) SAMUEL BEAL
(1825 - 1889) Oriental scholar, the first Englishman to translate direct from the Chinese the early records of Buddhism, thus throwing light upon Indian history. He was appointed chaplain in the Royal Navy, serving on the HMS Sybille (1856-58), during 2nd Opium War. A.L.S., 3pp. small 8vo., Falstone, Jan 21, 1879, to Mr. Hall, interesting content. In part: "…Thanks you very much for the Books. I was half way down the hill yesterday to come to you, when I saw the train start. It is difficult to keep correct time in such a place as this. I should be glad to know whether it has ever suggested itself to you that 'Deo soli invicto' might also be rendered 'To the God alone unconquered' Of course it has not this meaning because we have 'Deo invicto Herculi' & other phrases…" Thin slip of tape discoloration at top margin of pages 2 and 3.
