CIVIL WAR ILLUSTRATED PATRIOTIC AND FLAG OF TRUCE COVERS, LOT OF THREE, comprising a "Flag of Truce" example addressed to Miss Ellen Pollard, Norfolk, Virginia, with Old Point Comfort, Sep 4 postmark, and 3 cent stamp with "fancy" cancel; a Union patriotic cover example similar to Weiss number M-L75, but captioned "DEATH TO TRAITORS," addressed to Miss Moorhead Geo (?), Pittsburgh, Pa. (sic), from Mithoff Jones & Co, dated "Sept 10, '62" with Columbus, Ohio postmark dated "Sep 9", and 3 cent stamp with bar grid cancel; and an unused Union patriotic cover satirizing Jefferson Davis, the former President of the Confederate States, Weiss number C-D-43. Circa 1861-1865. Patriotic examples 3" x 5 1/4", flag of truce example 2 3/4" x 4 7/8".

Catalogue Note: A Miss Ellen Pollard of Norfolk, Virginia would go on to marry one Bassett A. Marsden, who served in the 6th Virginia Infantry until his capture at the Battle of Crampton's Gap on September 14th, 1862, and was paroled later that year. The postmark of the Flag of Truce letter unfortunately does not correspond with these dates, but the closeness of the dates and the coincidence of Miss Pollard and her future husband certainly make for interesting speculation.
