ANTHONY BAECHER ATTRIBUTED, WINCHESTER, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED EARTHENWARE / REDWARE HARVEST JUG, mottled lead- and manganese-glazed over a slip wash, approximately one-gallon capacity, slightly tapered form with two incised upper-shoulder rings surrounding the top-mounted grooved strap handle, punched air-vent behind handle and flat-collared mouth to front of handle. Reserve. Attributed to Anthony Weis Bacher/Baecher (1824-1889), Winchester, VA. Circa 1860-1885. 10 1/2" HOA, 6 3/8" D base.

Discovered in a house at 120 Clifford St. in Winchester in 2004.

Catalogue Note: This form is extremely rare in the Shenandoah Valley and only a few examples by Baecher have been recorded. A nearly identical example inscribed by Baecher and dated 1872 was discovered in 2013.

Excellent as-found condition with no restoration, minor glaze flaking/wear to mouth, several light chips to edge of base, otherwise only a few scattered glaze flakes and some glaze skips, as made.
