Description
A Victorian silver travelling carriage lamp, the oval form having a hinged front section with an armorial engraving and opening to reveal a cylindrical candle holder, with an oval pierced border to the lower section above an inbuilt vesta case and the pull down base with a striking underside, the whole fitted with two hinged double hooks, one located to the lift up lid and the other to the lower back. Hallmarked Thomas Johnson I, London 1873. Maximum height measures 5 3/4 inches (14.5 cm), gross weight 13.14 ozt (408.6 grams).
Condition
The lamp displays general surface scratches, marks, wear and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Heavier patches of tarnishing to some areas, also some heavier contact marks and slight dints. However the overall condition appears fairly good as all hinged and moving sections appear in good working order. Part hallmarks to various parts. Some of the hallmarks appear rubbed and partly worn but all are still legible. Also with impressed retailer's mark 'Emanuel 27 Old Bond St. '
