Description
Southeast Asia, Tibet, China, ca. 18th century CE. A fine-quality drum used as a ritualistic instrument in Tibetan monk ceremonies with a line of monks all playing their drums simultaneously. Large round head covered in animal skin, deep black handle showing great patina with three heads and knot of eternity. Very fine custom base. Size: 26"L (66 cm).

In Vajrayana Buddhism, tantra techniques rooted in scriptures such as tantras and various tantric commentaries and treatises are used to attain Buddahood. Tantra refers to an inner realization that serves to prevent ordinary appearances and conceptions and to accomplish the four complete purities of a Buddha (environment, body, enjoyments and deeds).
