Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. An enormous globular redware terracotta vessel, with a gadrooned body, supported by a tripod of finely delineated parrots, the eyes pierced and highlighted by formlines. Scholars believe the inspiration for the fluted sides of Colima vessels was either the organic forms of pumpkins or barrel cacti. All is pigmented with a red burnished slip. A marvel of skilled technique and beauty! Size: 14-1/2" (36.83 cm) x 8-1/2" (21.59 cm).
