Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A very large redware pottery vessel depicting a gourd placed in a bowl, the gourd's gadrooned body magnificently modeled with vertical ribs, the bowl with concave walls and a small round concave foot, the vessel resolving to a flared rim. All is finished with a saturated red vermillion slip that was beautifully burnished and shows wonderful root marks and mineral deposits. This vessel is a classic case of art imitating life, as the indigenous of Mexico used hollowed gourds for storing and serving food and drink. Size: 8.25" in diameter x 5" H (21 cm x 12.7 cm)
