Description
Magna Graecia, South Italy, Paestan, ca. 340 to 330 BCE. A two-sided red-figure bell krater vessel for mixing wine and water. Attributed to the Asteas/Python workshop and adorned with rich iconography, the figures delineated in an almost silhouette-like manner characteristic of Paestan red-figure style. The iconography includes a seated nude female or hermaphrodite. On the reverse, a half-nude female figure. Above and just under the turned rim a wave-like motif. Beneath each handle, a stylized palmette. Size: 7-1/2" (19 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private London collection, 1987; Ex-J. Kluge collection, Charlottesville, Virginia, acquired from Royal Athena in 1988; Ex-P. Kluge collection, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1990-2010.
