Known for depicting simple objects against stark backgrounds, Donald Sultan’s works can be seen as abstracted still lifes. Often using the same motifs, this exquisite suite of lips is no exception. Both seductive and sinister, each print features lips pressed against a surface with two on white backgrounds and the others on black.

Executed in 1989, this set of four aquatints on BFK Rives with original slipcase are each signed, titled, dated and numbered thirty-three from an edition of one hundred. Printed by Crommelynck and published by Art Multi, Paris, this portfolio was published on the occasion of the book “Donald Sultan – Appoggiatures” by Philippe Sergeant. Donald Sultan (American, b. 1951)

Growing up in the Appalachian Mountains, painter, printmaker, and sculptor Donald Sultan earned his BFA from the University of North Carolina in 1973 and MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1975. He was awarded the Creative Artist Public Service grant in 1979 after moving to New York four years earlier and gained prominence as a member of the New Image movement in the late 1970’s. His first solo exhibition was with the Artists Space in 1977 in New York, and his work soon gained international critical acclaim with exhibitions worldwide. Using both abstract and representational imagery, Sultan became best known for his large-scale still life and landscape paintings made of industrial materials in a minimalist style. His works are held in the collections of the Tate Gallery, National Gallery of Australia, and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, among many others.
