This Pagode comes with a German registration and an H-registration.

The W113 marked the transition from the more curvaceous forms of Mercedes to a more functional style. The aim of this design was to delineate it from its predecessors and achieve a more masculine appearance. Smooth surfaces, lots of storage space and the absence of decorative elements are design characteristics of the Pagoda SL. The main market was the USA and the majority of vehicles went to California.

The ‘Pagode’ was the first SL to utilize extensive security features. Since its foundation, the ‘Tailfin’ W111 group has been fitted with a 30cm shorter wheel base, the SL also has a rigid passenger cabin with crumple zones in the ductile front and rear segments. The interior is rounded as in the limousine with no hard corners or edges. As with its predecessors, seatbelts are available as an optional extra. In this model the steering gear has been moved from the crash hazard area at the front and features a dislocated steering column which prevents a feared lancing effect in the event of a head on crash. In 1967, safety steering columns with impact absorbers were added to the steering gear.

The chassis with recirculating ball steering and rear-joint swing axle was also copied from the W 111 limousine. The dual-circuit brake system has disc brakes on the front axle, the introduction of the 250 SL saw the use this system on the rear axle as well. Its suspension is firm, but very comfortable for a sports car. Gas pressure shock absorbers guarantee cushioning in what was thefirst Mercedes-Benz passenger car that came with standardradial tires.
