Item Details
Description
Mexico, ca. 19th Century CE. A lovely antique retablo depicting St. Rita of Cascia, the Augustinian nun who, along with St. Jude, is the patron saint of impossible causes. Here she is shown wearing the robes of her order. She contemplates a the crucifix in her right hand with a gentle smile. The wound in her forehead is a "partial" stigmata, the result of a thorn from her crucifix, which she received one day while praying. She stands beside a table draped in red cloth, and a red curtain frames the scene. 6-3/4" x 9-7/8"
