Description
A great, early ivory English pique cane. The ivory handle is 3 3/4" high a 1 1/2" at its widest. It is decorated on top with a large floral motif of tiny, hollow silver pique. The sides are fashioned with a raised central ring, and decorated eyelets pierce the ivory in the 17th Century manner. It is decorated with tulips and loops of silver pique spherules. There is a 3/4" scalloped silver collar that is line and punch-decorated. It is inscribed: "E. Lewis, 1712". The shaft is malacca with lots of usage dings and scrapes. It ends with a 3 1/4" worn-down brass ferrule that is replete with age dents and dings. The overall length is 35" and the general condition is very good with lots of age lines in the ivory and much of the silver pique still intact. This superb item comes to Tradewinds from the John Bunker Collection. According to Mr. Bunker, he obtained it from the estate of John H. Talley. Estimate: $6000-$8000.
