Description
A great 17th Century English ivory cane. The elephant ivory handle is 3 7/8"” high and 1 1/3” at its thickest. Like its pique-decorated counter parts, it has a raised central ring. This example lacks the silver pique decoration but it has a wonderful yellow age patina and the ivory is pierced in the 17th Century manner for a wrist cord. There is a 2 1/2” punch-decorated silver collar with scalloped edges on a malacca shaft that ends with a very old burnished-brass ferrule that is lined and has many dents and gouges. It is worn down from its original much longer length, from years of use. The overall length is 33 1/2" and it is in very good condition, with the shaft showing digs and scrapes from its 300+ years of existence. It is ca 1695, and it is a marvelous, very early example of the type.
