Description
A wonderful ivory cane of a carousing monk. The elephant ivory “L” handle is 2 1/4” high and 4 3/4” to the side. It depicts a laughing, hooded monk holding a wine glass in one hand and a hand of playing cards in the other. He is obviously enjoying an evening of gaming and drinking. There is a 1/2” silver collar inscribed: “O. A. Brigham, Lowell, Mass., 1887”. The shaft is mahogany with a 1 1/3” burnished brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 34 1/4” and the condition is very good. (The amusing carving appears to be European and the original American owner may have purchased it overseas and then perhaps had it mounted and/or inscribed in America.)
