Item Details
Description
A Napoleon III Service des Voyages , third quarter 19th century, the oak and brass-bound box and hinged cover with carrying handles, the lock-plate inscribed Gouverneur Fres gainiers de L.L.M.M Imperiales 37 q de L'horloge , the red-leather-lined interior fitted with a Christople silver-plate hot-water pot and spirit burner, the pot with Imperial coat of arms, a glass spirit decanter and stopper engraved with crowned 'N', a selection of attendant Sevres tea wares, comprising; a pair of sucriers and covers, a slop bowl, a saucer dish, eleven tea-bowls and twelve saucers, white porcelain and gilt with the Imperial cypher, a crowned 'N', for the most part with green and iron-red printed potting and decorating codes circa 1865, the sucriers with earlier Louis-Philippe period marks but decorated with crowned 'N' and carrying chateau inventory marks for the Chateau de Pau; and a Napoleon III glass part wine set ensuite, engraved and gilt with the Imperial cypher, comprising; seven wine glasses and a pair of decanters and stoppers N.B. From the two sucriers which carry inventory marks for the Chateau de Pau it would perhaps too much to suggest that chateau for the provenance although this service would have been part of the inventory of one of the Imperial chateaux. Services of this sort were not intended for Imperial use but rather but those in attendance upon the Imperial family such as equerries, ladies-in-waiting etc. and much Sevres white and gilt porcelain of this type survives. Though the chateau at Pau, birthplace of Henri IV survived the revolution, it was in poor repair and Louis-Philippe (Roi des Francais 1830-48) commenced repairs and alterations which were continued from 1852 by Napoleon III. The latter is thought to have visited only once though the Empress was a more occasional visitor.
