Description:
4 leaves, written in ink, mounted on fine paper leaves in custom binding of red morocco stamped in gilt with the title, author and collector Elmer Belt. Photograph of Bertrand Russell also mounted on a leaf. 27x19.5 cm. (10½x7½").
This handwritten manuscript by the British philosopher Bertrand Russell, decrying the unequal distribution of wealth, and the millions going to war and armaments, once belonged to Charlie Chaplin, and he presented it to Elmer Belt. There is a small card inscribed by Chaplin, mounted on the front pastedown, "Dear Elmer, I don't know how to thank you but perhaps you would like this little manuscript of Bertrand Russell which I have treasured. Charlie Chaplin." Laid in is a Typed Letter Signed by Charlie [Chaplin], to Karl [Valentin?], referring to an earlier letter to Chaplin from J. Middleton Murry, editor of the literary criticism magazine The Adelphi, which is also present. The letter from Chaplin to Valentin (sometimes called "The German Charlie Chaplin," dated Dec. 4th, 1923, expresses support for The Adelphi, discusses briefly Valentin's film projects ("I trust you are well into your Scenarios for the forthcoming production of Dinky Dean, Jackie Coogan and Baby Penny"), and his own efforts. Elmer Belt bookplate on front pastedown.
