Meiji Period (1868-1912) A finely sculpted and delicately painted figure of a Japanese "bijin" (beautiful woman) or "geisha" (芸者), her black hair upswept in the traditional style, her left hand demurely held under her chin, the "kimono" dress painted with swirling patterns of blue ribbons accented with half-flowers of chrysanthemums, accented with thinly drawn lines of real gold, on a red enamel field.
