Description
A large and fine Resht panel, Persian, circa 1860, with central flower-filled medallion on a black cartouche, the scarlet field covered in appliqued and chain-stitched scrolling flowerheads with perching birds, lions bearing swords with smiling sun-bursts emerging behind them (the Qajar dynasty symbol 1794-1925), the outer scarlet border with flowering urn repeats, 478 by 315cm
Condition
Colours are wonderful and vibrant. Small nicks in red felt and slight moth damage to edging borders generally. Central blue flower in roundel – slight moth damage to one of the white flowers that circles it. Slight moth damage to random motifs generally but these are not immediately noticeable as the pattern is so busy. Repair to black edging border approx. 150x40cm, very hard to detect – the wool is a slightly different texture. Repair to edge of ne floret in this area also. Couple of moth areas in the narrow blue and orange outer bars. Considering the age, complexity and size of the piece, it is in good condition.
