Description
Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, Ca 664 to 525 BCE. Cast bronze bull striding forward, body with incised decoration comprising vulture's wings across shoulders, a tasseled mat on back. The Apis bull was sacred to Memphis and each time one died it was embalmed, mummified and the date of its death recorded on temple walls. 3-1/4"L x 2"H. Custom base.
Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Estate, Denver, CO, acquired in the 1950s.
