Item Details
Description
We are exceptionally proud to showcase this incredible RARE 1800-1820 Josiah Spode classical staged Doric Greek column form, match pot / spill vase, featuring gorgeous florals, a beautiful Cobalt ground + a fantastic Egyptian peacock eye gilded diaper pattern! This magnificent vase was potted at the Spode Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire Potteries, long before the acquisition by Copeland & Garrett in 1833. Our brilliant porcelain treasure is finished in the tradition of the early Sevres soft paste classics, and you will be hard pressed to find another spill this old and in this unbelievable condition! The base hand script Spode + the #1166 pattern is referenced on Page #589 of the Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks / by Geoffrey A. Godden, and his mark number #3648b even specifies our 1166, making this written mark (as he puts it), a positively 1790-1820 signature! This one of a kind vase has a black Ebony stand, and was made to hold rolled-up strips of paper or thin wood tapers used to light candles. Our vase stands 2.25 x 2.25 x 4.25" tall and weighs 8 oz, with the black Ebony stand. *Provenance: Dr. Douglas D. Ashley Estate, Charleston SC. Research consulted: Encyclopedia of Marks On American, English, and European Earthenware Ironstone & Stoneware 1780 to 1980 / by Arnold & Dorothy Kowalsky; Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks, AND, An Illustrated Encyclopedia Of British Pottery And Porcelain 2nd Ed / both by Geoffrey A. Godden; Bonhams Lot 596-Sale21214; Spode by Leonard Whiter. For Shipping, the weight is 12 oz. and box is 6 x 5 x 5".
