Description
William Van Zandt (Am. 19th C), framed sulky and rider oil on canvas, signed lower left "Wm. Van Zandt 1894". 28" high, 34" wide. Bears label on stretcher "From James Vint's Art Store, 84 North Pearl St., Albany N.Y." James Vint is listed as a storekeeper and entrepreneur in Albany during the latter part of the 19th century, and is listed in "The Empire State: It's Industries and Wealth". Original frame and original stretcher, good condition with small touched up areas. This painting descended in the family of the sulky driver, Walter Cornell Harrington (1856-1905) and is offered with the three following lots, three companion portraits including a portrait of the sulky driver’s mother Sarah Elizabeth Cornell (1823-1882), a double portrait of Sarah and her brother William W. Cornell (1812-1894), and a portrait of William, attributed to Joseph Allen Haskell, painted in 1820. The Cornell and Harrington families were prominent in Troy and Albany, New York, with established wealth and social status with wide ranging business interests including manufacturing, banking, farming and public service.
