Portraits of N.V. Gogol: 1809-1909
A collection of portraits of Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol (1809-1852) was published with the assistance of the Society of Lovers of Russian Literature to mark the centenary of the birth of Gogol, the Ukrainian-born Russian playwright, novelist and short story writer. The book is divided into two parts: an annotated list of famous portraits of the writer on pages 3-15 and reproductions of all portraits. The portraits trace Gogol's life in chronological order: from 1827, when he was not yet famous, until his death in Moscow in 1852; including portraits made during the writer’s residence in Rome. In addition, the publication contains images of Gogol's death mask and hand-drawn portraits of him in the coffin. The purpose of this publication was to collect together all the portraits of the writer painted from life and documented. Each portrait is provided with an annotation. Most of the images are naturalistic depictions of Gogol himself, although there are also group portraits, allegorical scenes and satirical caricature.
Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol (1 April [O.S. 20 March] 1809[a] – 4 March [O.S. 21 February] 1852) was a Russian novelist, short story writer, and playwright of Ukrainian origin.
