FABERGE - EXTREMELY RARE GOLD and and DIAMONDS PORTRAIT of NICHOLAS II
This is a Russian gold portrait created by Vasiliy Zuyev, set in a sapphire and diamond frame, signed, and dated 1907 on the front of the portrait. Vasiliy Zuyev was one of the two licensed artists who made portraits of Nicholas 2nd in the Faberge workshop. It's a beautiful Faberge item. The gold and diamonds have been verified; they are all natural. When you touch and hold a piece of Faberge sterling, you are in contact with something truly exceptional. It connects you not only to the era of the czars but also to an even more ancient ancestry, representing all the imperial courts throughout history.
PROVENANCE: 1. The Antique Enamel Company Auctions, London, United Kingdom, April 21, 2015; 2. Live Auctioneers, Russian Antique collection, 2023, sold for $8,000 - please see the screenshot; 3. Our sale of this item adds another layer of provenance. History of sale is very IMPORTANT for serious collection.
DIMENSIONS: 7 x 4.5 cm (2.8 x 1.8 inches).
KNOWN HISTORY: Initially, on the reverse side, this portrait used to have a pin and the maker's marks 'I.P.' (for Julius Alexandrovitch Rappoport, a famous FABERGE workmaster), as well as a 'purity' mark '56' (indicating the gold content). It was previously published in 2015 on Live Auctioneers and an Internet Auction in the UK (lot 48, 2015) - please refer to the two screenshots for reference. For some reason, the maker's marks and the attachment on the reverse were removed, possibly because the previous owner intended to insert it into a gold box - as shown in the next screenshot.
VERY INTERESTING FACT: In 1911, a Russian Imperial presentation snuffbox was decorated with a portrait of Nicholas II by artist Vasiliy Zuev - please refer to the image. In 1913, on behalf of the Emperor, it was presented as a gift to Turhan Pasha, the Turkish Ambassador in St. Petersburg. This snuffbox was purchased from Faberge in 1909 for 2500 rubles. To put that into perspective, the price of a 7-room apartment on the prestigious Big Sea Street in St. Petersburg at that time was about 2000 rubles. Today, the price for an apartment in that area ranges from $2,000,000 to $3,000,000. This box was sold at Christie's in London in November 2010 for an astounding $1,463,985. Please compare our item with the item on that box and also consider our price in comparison to the price of that box.
ESTIMATED PRICE: $2,000 - $20,000 (significantly lower than today's market price). You have a GREAT CHANCE to purchase a rare item for your collection, and over the years, its price will only INCREASE.

Karl FABERGE: Peter Karl Faberge, also known as Karl Gustavovich Faberge was a Russian jeweller best known for the famous Faberge eggs made in the style of genuine Easter eggs, but using precious metals and gemstones rather than more mundane materials. He's the founder of the famous jewelry legacy House of Faberge. The House of Faberge is a jewellery firm founded in 1842 in St. Petersburg, Imperial Russia, by Gustav Faberge, using the accented name Faberge. Gustav's sons Peter Karl Faberge and Agathon Faberge Sr. and grandsons followed him in running the business until it was nationalised by the Bolsheviks in 1918. The firm was famous for designing elaborate jewel-encrusted Faberge eggs for the Russian Tsars and a range of other work of high quality and intricate detail. In 1924, Peter Carl's sons Alexander Faberge and Eugene Faberge opened Faberge & Cie in Paris, making similar jewellery items and adding the name of the city to their rival firm's trademark, styling it FABERGE, PARIS.

Julius RAPPOPORT: Julius Alexandrovitch Rappoport, Russian silversmith, Faberge workmaster. Born in 1864. Trained in Berlin, one of Faberge's rare craftsmen of Jewish origin. Julius Rappoport opened his first own workshop in St. Petersburg at Ekateriniski Canal in 1883, then he moved to Moscow to become a Faberge workmaster. His maker's mark was IP and in Russian Cyrillic. He belonged from 1886 till 1908 to four 'workmasters', main leaders of Faberge workshops. He was the Faberge's most important supplier of large silver objects. He is best known for his naturalistic animal figures (massive silver casts), but he also executed special commissions for the Imperial Family, the Imperial Cabinet and noble families Yousupov an others. Recently a few of these special commissions that were designed by Faberge, and made by Rappoport, have been auctioned by Bonhams and Christies in London (England) and in Munich. His workshop was taken over by the First Silver Artel around 1909. Died in 1916.
