Description
Jacob W. Gates Ukraine / New York (1903-1997) Boston Harbor oil on canvas Signed lower left. Biography from the Archives of askART: An impressionist painter of landscapes, figures, still lifes, interiors, and marine scenes, he was known for paintings that expressed his feelings about his subject matter in a style that adhered to traditionalism at a time when modernist, abstract work was gaining widespread acceptance. His work also had the obvious influence of French Tonalist painter Camille Corot. He was born in the Ukraine and began painting as a youngster in Russia where he did formal study at the National Academy of Design. He emigrated to New York City and attended the Art Students League as a student of Sidney Dickenson, Ivan Olinsky, and Robert Phillip. He then became an active teacher at the Salmagundi Club, of which he was an elected member, and taught cultural programs sponsored by various corporations as well as by the National Arts Club. In 1967, he was elected in New York to active membership of the Allied Artists of America, in 1980 to the Knickerbocker Society, and in 1981 to the Hudson Valley Art Association, which is committed to the advancement of traditional representational art. Early in his career, he was represented by Hammer Galleries and The Grand Central Art Gallery. In 1969, he earned the Grumbacher Award at the National Arts Club in New York City for his painting "A Quiet Evening," and in 1980, the Robert Simmons Brush Award from the Knickerbocker Artists. In the 1960s, he received five awards from the Salmagundi Club exhibitions. U.S. Navy personnel commissioned him to paint portraits of high-ranking personnel as did well known personalities, Bess Meyerson, Walter Matthau, and Tony Bennett. He has taught numerous workshops including at the Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable, Massachusetts in 1978, at Bayside and Tanglewood Preserve in Long Island, and at Darien, Connecticut where he also exhibited at the Cochrane Studio Art Gallery. His work is offered on the Gulf Coast from the Darvish Gallery of Fine Art in Naples, Florida, where a retrospective of his work from 1903 to 1997 was held in February 1999. 15 1/2" x 19 1/2", 22 1/2" x 26 1/2" (frame)
