Born on February 8, 1925 in the city of Belopol (now Sumy region, Ukraine). Father - Ivan Antonovich worked as an accountant, mother Maria Andreevna (née Kolomiytseva) - pianist, music teacher.
During the events of 1918-1919, the families of Viktor Zaretsky’s parents supported the General A. Denikin Volunteer Army. In 1925, Zaretsky moved to Donbass, fearing persecution. The artist’s childhood and youth were spent in the working villages of Gorlovka and Stalin (now Donetsk), where his father worked as an accountant in the then-created chemical industry.
In 1943-1945 he served in the reserve regiment. After demobilization, he lived with his parents for some time in the village of Obidimo near Tula. He took private lessons from the painter L. Orekhov there.
In 1946 he entered the art school at the Kiev State Art Institute, where he studied under Gennady Titov.
Teachers at the Kiev Art Institute, where he entered in 1947, are K. Eleva, M. Sharonov, S. Grigoriev. He was a Repin and Stalin scholarship holder. The diploma painting "Queue at the Lenin Mausoleum" received the highest mark. After graduating from the institute in 1953, Zaretsky remained in it to teach. In 1953 he married classmate Alla Gorskaya, in 1954 their son Alex was born.
Together with his wife Alla Gorskaya, he was a leader of the sixties movement. After curtailing the liberal course and increasing pressure from the authorities, he replaced Les Tanyuk in 1963 as chairman of the Sovremennik Club of Creative Youth. This rotation was agreed with L. Tanyuk. As a participant in the war, a member of the Communist Party, a member of the Union of Artists, he introduced himself to the leadership of a compromise figure. Nevertheless, the Club's course has not changed and it was soon dissolved.
Alla Gorskaya was killed on November 28, 1970, as many then believed [who?], Under mysterious circumstances. In 1977, Viktor Zaretsky married his teacher’s daughter Maya Grigorieva.
He died after a long serious illness on August 23, 1990. He was buried in the City (Berkovetsky cemetery) in the grave of his mother and father, next to his wife.
The creativity of Victor Zaretsky is characterized by a multi-vector stylistic approach, the search for new in traditional. The early canvases are marked by an expressive composition, rhythm, silhouette, searches for national character.
