Description

A good George III silver salver John Carter, London 1770 Shaped-circular with gadroon border, centred with an engraved armorial within a ring suspended from a bow tied ribbon and tied leaves below, on three scroll feet, underside with scratch weight '44=3', diameter 36cm, weight 42oz. Footnotes: These are the impaled arms of Hon. Revd. Brownlow NORTH DD (1741-1820) Bishop of Lichfield 1771, Bishop of Worcester 1774 and Bishop of Winchester 1781 and his wife Henrietta Maria BANISTER (1750-1796) of Chelsea. They were married in 1771 and we expect this item to be a marriage piece. The Hon. Revd. Brownlow NORTH was born in Chelsea the second son of Francis NORTH (1704-1790) Earl of Guildford, created 1752, by his second wife Elizabeth KAYE (1707-1745) daughter of Sir Arthur KAYE (1670-1726) 3rd Baronet of Woodsome, Yorkshire by Anne MAROWE (1670-1740). He was the younger half-brother of George Augustus NORTH (1732-1792) 2nd Earl of Guildford KG, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain 1770-1782. Henrietta Maria BANNISTER was the daughter and co-heir of John BANNISTER of Chelsea by Elizabeth BOSTON (1726-1789).
