Title: Kuba palm wine cup - DRC ex Zaire - African Art Tribal ArtDate/Period: Second half XX°Origin: DRC ex ZaireDimension: 11,42 InchMaterials: woodWeight: 1,98 PoundsItem type: usual items, cupsProvenance: The collection comes from the tribal art collection of Guy Mercier, a consultant for the Solvay group, who undertook it at the beginning of the 20th century. Although he travelled extensively in West and Central Africa as part of his work, collecting works in situ, the majority of his collection came from the "cabinets of curiosity" that abounded in European capitals during the 1920s. It also comes from prestigious galleries (Paris, Brussels, London, New York, etc.). The Kuba and the tribes settled between the Sankuru and Kasai rivers, including the Bushoong and Dengese who also originate from the Mongo group, are renowned for the refinement of prestige objects created for members of the higher ranks of their society. Several Kuba groups produced anthropomorphic ceremonial objects with refined motifs, including palm wine cups or poison oracles, drinking horns and goblets. The Kuba kingdom was founded in the 16th century by the Bushoong, who are still ruled by a king. They are the most prolific group in Western Kasai. Ritual ceremonies were always an occasion to display decorative arts and masks, to honor the spirit of the deceased or to honor the king. Most of these masks embody nature spirits, the guardians of fertility and fecundity, known as ngesh . Source: Kuba, ed. 5continents, Binkley and Darish.Additional Information: Stand not included.
