Description: Formerly known as "Niam-Niam" because they were considered to be anthropophagous, the tribes known as the Zande and Azandé settled from Chad on the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire), Sudan and the Central African Republic. The name of their ethnic group means "those who own a lot of land", an allusion to their warrior past originating in Sudan. Yanda statuettes were exhibited at divination sessions held by the Mani society, during which the head of the society would coat them with paste and blow smoke onto them. The Zandé also used poison oracles in many circumstances, and had a secret language.
