La qualità assoluta dell'opera e la tecnica esecutiva, con l'uso dell'acquerello bruno e i rialzi di biacca, fanno propendere decisamente l'attribuzione a Jacopo da Ponte. Inoltre, non possono sfuggire alcuni particolari magistrali, come lo strazio del volto impietrito eseguito grazie a un mirabile gioco chiaroscurale, nonché il tremolio delle vesti di Gesù che trasmettono il suo stato di umano terrore.

Questo straordinario documento rappresenta un'importante aggiunta alla grafica di Jacopo Bassano. Esso è lo studio che il maestro fece nell'ideazione dell'Orazione nell'orto dei Getsemani, dipinto che risulta disperso. L'opera ci giunge grazie alle versioni dei due figli artisticamente capaci: Leandro e Francesco. A questo proposito si vedano l'Orazione nell'orto del Museo Puskin di Mosca, firmato da Leandro Bassano, oppure la versione di Francesco al Sarasota Ringling Museum.

The absolute quality of the artwork and the technique of execution, with the use of brown watercolour and highlights of biacca to a definite attribution to Jacopo da Ponte. Moreover, some masterly details cannot be overlooked, such as the agony of the petrified face executed through an admirable chiaroscuro play, as well as the trembling of Jesus' robes that convey his state of human terror.

This extraordinary document represents an important addition to Jacopo Bassano's graphic artwork. It is the study that the master made in the conception of the Oration in the Garden of Gethsemane, a painting that is missing. The artwork comes to us thanks to the versions of his two artistically capable sons: Leandro and Francesco. You should see the Oration in the Garden at the Puskin Museum in Moscow, signed by Leandro Bassano, or Francesco's version at the Sarasota Ringling Museum.
