Edo Period Japanese Lacquer Escritoire

This Japanese lacquer escritoire from the early 19th century is an incredible example of classic Japanese craftsmanship: from the carpentry, to the lacquer work, gold leaf, and metalwork of the hinges and still-functioning lock mechanism.

This mobile writing desk from the end of the samurai era is decorated with two masks from traditional Noh theater on the lid, as well as heraldry for the Tokugawa clan, who ruled Japan for centuries as the last Sh?guns (military emperors). Inside, the lids for brush and ink storage compartments are adorned with gold-painted depictions of crickets, cicadas, and a snail.

The velvet-topped writing surface also lifts up to reveal two larger storage compartments, the inside of which are painted in the maki-e lacquer technique which consists of sprinkling bits of gold leaf over the still wet lacquer.

This item shows normal wear for approximately two centuries of age. The only major damage to report is a crack in the wood and lacquer on the top of the box, and some cracking of the lacquer on the bottom of the box.
