Item Details
Description
Offered in this lot is a Rare 1913 First Edition of "The Quest Of The Fish-Dog Skin" by James Willard Schultz, illustrated with black and white plates by George Varian, publisher Houghton Mifflin Company Boston and New York, The Riverside Press Cambridge. Original owner signature and 1913 date on front endpaper. "The Quest of the Fish-Dog Skin" is a story of the adventures of two boys: an Indian boy and a white boy. These two set forth from the lodges of the Blackfeet, in the company of an older Indian who acts as their guide, philosopher, and friend, on a quest to the salt water to find the medicine-animal that is called "fish-dog". One of the boys knew from books this was some sort of a seal. This boy was, in fact, J. W. Schultz, whose first book, "My Life as an Indian," was published in 1907. As a boy and young man he lived with the Indians on the upper Missouri in the days before the white man had penetrated the far West, and his writings about the Indians are based upon an intimate knowledge of their native life. James Willard Schultz, or Apikuni, (1859-1947) was an American author, explorer, Glacier National Park guide, fur trader and historian of the Blackfeet Indians. He operated a fur trading post at Carroll, Montana and lived among the Pikuni tribe during the period 1880-82. He was given the name Apikuni by the Pikuni chief, Running Crane. Apikuni in Blackfeet means "Spotted Robe." Schultz is most noted for his 37 books, most about Blackfoot life, and for his contributions to the naming of prominent features in Glacier National Park. This tan coloured cloth bound illustrated hardcover is in fair condition, slight scuffing noted to cover edges, cover illustration front top corner missing, loose spine. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and very slight foxing. Measures 5.5"W x 8.25"L x 1"D, weight approx. 1lb, 2oz.
