Item Details
Description
Featured in this lot are seven pieces of gorgeous Nemadji Pottery, also known as Minnesota Swirl pottery circa 1930-50s. Nemadji pottery originates in Minnesota's Arrowhead region. Many people now consider it to be "Indian pottery," even though it has nothing to do with the Ojibway tribe. Clay that was excavated from the Nemadji River's banks was initially used to make it. In Moose Lake, Nemadji Pottery was founded in 1923. It produced decorative items meant mainly for the tourist trade, as well as floor tiles for widespread distribution, mostly in the west and northeast. The painted decoration had a unique look, and the design is still in use today. A note in one of the pots reads, "Twenty-five thousand years ago the ice sheet of the glacial age covered the land. It is now known that the primitive ancestors of our present Indians lived here when the great ice sheet started to melt and retreat. Clays of various shades and composition were made by the glacial ice sheets; the great weight of the ice ground rocks and ores into dust, which became clays, afterwards washed and refined by the lakes and streams from the melting glaciers. From these clays Nemadji Pottery is made. The Indians used this clay left by the ice sheet to make cooking pots and vases, and in the ancient warrior's grave are found fragments of his favorite cooking pot. Nemadji Art Pottery is made largely from designs of this ancient Indian pottery and many of their traditional shapes are preserved in our designs. The coloring of Nemadji Art Pottery is accomplished in a manner that allows no two pieces to be exactly alike. The pottery is burned in a kiln and glazed on the inside. The warm rich colors of this pottery recall the colorful costumes of the redman, who, though long since gone to the happy hunting ground, still haunts in spirit the plains, streams, woods, and lakes of this our Empire". This collection features six smaller vases and one smaller bowl. The vases show various styles and shapes with beautiful coloring throughout in a swirled pattern. The colors include green, yellow, beige, red, orange, brown, magenta, blue, pink and light yellow. The bowl features the same pattern and shows colors of red, blue, yellow, green and beige. The bottom of some pieces read, "Nemadji Pottery U.S.A.". The pieces show good condition overall with some slight wear from their age and use over the years but no signs of obvious damage is present. The vases measure from 2 7/8" height and 8 1/2" in circumference to 5 1/8" height x 6 3/8" in circumference. The bowl measures 1 5/8" height and 6" in diameter. The pieces have a collective weight of 2 pounds and 2 ounces.
