Biography: Landscape painter and lithographer Joseph Morviller, 1800-1870, was born in Paris, France. He studied fresco painting in England and France. He came to Boston, Massachusetts in 1852, painting his characteristic picturesque winter landscapes with genre elements. His images were published as chromo-lithographs by the Boston art-print publisher, Louis Prang. Morviller exhibited in Providence, Rhode Island; Chicago, Illinois; and New York City; as well as at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; and for twenty years at the Boston Athenaeum. His work is in the collections of the Toledo Museum of Art, Ohio; Amherst College, Amherst, Massachusetts; Stowe-Day Foundation, Hartford, Connecticut; and public libraries in Malden, Massachusetts; New Bedford, Massachusetts; and Topeka, Kansas. Joseph Morviller's work is included in John Driscoll's book, All That Is Glorious Around Us: Paintings From The Hudson River School, published in 1997 by Cornell University Press, Ithaca and London. The paintings in the book were part of a traveling exhibition that was shown, in 1997, at the Westmoreland Museum of Art, Greensburg, Pennsylvania; in 1998, at the Palmer Museum of Art, Pennsylvania State University, in University Park; in 1999, at the Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts; and later that same year, at the National Academy of Design, New York City.
