Item Details
Description
Purvis Young painting on a check paper. Purvis Young (1943-2010) was a self-taught artist from Miami's Overtown neighborhood. Sentenced to prison as a teenager, he rediscovered his love for art while incarcerated, drawing inspiration from masters like Rembrandt and Gauguin. After his release in 1964, Young taught himself to paint and used acrylic and commercial paint on found materials like wood and cardboard. His vivid depictions of his community adorned the walls of Goodbread Alley and later filled his studio. Young gained recognition during his lifetime and his work continues to be exhibited and collected today.
