TWO PAIRS OF COROMANDEL LACQUER DOUBLE-SIDED PANELS
Kangxi, one pair signed Shen Sui (?-1685)
Comprising: a pair of panels carved and infilled with pigment to depict figurative scenes, the reverse inscribed and signed Shen Sui, later framed; and another pair of panels carved with birds on flowering and fruiting branches, the reverse lacquered and gilded with figurative scenes.
27cm (10 5/8in) high (4).

It is rare to find a piece of Coromandel lacquer attributed to a specific artist. Little is known of Shen Sui (?-1685) beyond his listing in the China Biographical database.
Condition
The pair of birds panels have two lower corners restored. the gilt decorated side well worn.
The other pair with surface cracking and some retouching.
Both with surface wear, discolouration, scratching and abrasions.
