Description
The Constitutions of the Several Independent States of America; The Declaration of Independence; and the Articles of Confederation Between the Said States. London: J. Stockdale, 1783. Second English edition. Publisher's paper and boards, as issued, housed in a book-form morocco-backed case. 8 3/8 x 5 inches (21.5 x 13 cm); 472, [4] pp.; engraved portrait of George Washington. A remarkable survival, in the original blue paper boards and white paper spine, completely uncut and unopened, trifling toning to text but an apparently unread copy, much as it would have been received by a reader at the time.
The fine portrait of Washington is engraved by W. Sharp after a portrait. and shows Washington surmounted with a liberty cap and rattlesnake, with the words "Dont tread on me" above. According to Howes, the first edition was the previous year, but this is the first with the Declaration of Rights etc. Sabin 16088; Howes C-716.
