Description
The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club... Edited by "Boz." London: Chapman & Hall, April 1836-November 1837. First edition in original parts. 20 numbers in 19 individual parts in original green wrappers, mixed wrappers issues as usual with approximately ten parts in the first issue, wrappers of all parts but two dated 1836, letterpress from part 7 on apparently all first issue, with 43 engraved plates including the engraved title, the plates mostly in the first states (with the two "Buss" plates in part III). Housed in a cloth pull-off slipcase and chemise. Some chipping, restoration and rebacking to wrappers, back wrappers for part 19/20 apparently for part XVII, Pickwick Advertisers present in some parts, occasional soiling to wrappers, sold with all faults (given the notorious complexities of the publication of this work).
Despite all the caveats above, this is a very nice set indeed of Pickwick, sold by Ernest Dawson in 1932 and accompanied by extensive notes by the noted bibliographer Ellen Shaffer.
