Description
A pair of Charles Dickens The Pickwick Papers in volumes I and II. Signed by artist John Austen and numbered; 1933.
John Archibald Austen was a British book illustrator. He moved to London in 1906 where he studied art. His early works, including a fine Hamlet, were Beardsleyesque in style, but after 1925 he was influenced by the Art Deco movement.
Books are in good condition; slipcovers fragile and thin. Slipcase does not hold books in.
From the estate and lifelong collection of William Garrett Hodges (1946-2014). Hodges was a Virginia-based dealer of fine arts, with specialization in prints and rare books, having collected for decades. He supplied and consulted various groups on antiquities throughout his career, including the White House, the Vice President's residence, the FBI, and multiple film and television series.
