9th-10th century. Silvered bronze, 1 1/8" high in exceptional preservation. Swelled beams with pointed trefoil terminals, one underdeveloped in the casting process. Both beams with high raised edges. The cross beam centered with four nubs at the beam intersection. Silver restored and mounted on a modern sterling silver chain. Saxons were late to accept Christianity and did so only after their defeat by Charlemagne in the early 9th century. It's possible that these crosses were worn as an indication of that acceptance and by extension, submission to Carolingian rule.
