Born in Dublin, Aloysius O’Kelly became in 1874 one of the first Irish artists to study at the Parisian Ecole des Beaux-Arts. In the 1880s he was a Special Artist at The Illustrated London News and traveled in Ireland highlighting the Land League. He is known for paintings of Brittany, Northern African scenes, as well as New York City and American landscapes. In 1895, O’Kelly emigrated to NY and changed his name to Arthur Oakley, although he continued visiting and exhibiting in France. He was a member of the NYC Watercolor Club, exhibiting also in Chicago and Milwaukee. O’Kelly is one of the most important painters to emerge from 19th-century Ireland, and the most radically politicized.
