Cute zoomorphic Lukwakongo Ya Wakusomba mask
Not all horned masks are Kayamba masks (these are larger and are used by guardians during rites of passage to adulthood)
According to Alexandre Safiannikoff, the small “horned” masks are Lukwakongo Ya Wakusomba
They were placed at the entrance to a premises during meetings where the possible guilt of one of the members of the Bwami society was discussed.
The presence of the mask invites all members to examine their conscience and enter only after receiving absolution from their peers.
