Lot Essay

Acquired by Florent-Louis-Marie comte du Châtelet-Lomont on 31st December 1767 between his posting as Minister-Plenipotentiary of France to Austria and his appointment as French Ambassador to Great Britain. The service includes a mixture of 'bleu pontille' dinner wares and 'verd/vert fleurs' dessert wares. The 1767 delivery included six seaux crénelés, all in 'verd/vert fleurs' at a cost of 192 livres each. David Peters discusses the different components of the service and refers to several sales of seaux crénelés, including an example of 1766/67 (from the Chappey Collection), sold Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, on 27-31 May 1907, lot 1135; two 1767 seaux crénelés sold Christie's, London, 30 October 1947, lot 64 and a further two 1767 seaux crénelés sold Sotheby's, New York, 20 October 1989, lot 179, see Sèvres Plates and Service of the Eighteenth Century, Little Berkhamsted, 2015, Vol. II, pp. 387-388.
Dominque Joffroy was a painter of flowers and figures at Sèvres from 1754 to 1770.
