A BRONZE TRIPOD 'DRAGON FISH AND EAGLE' INCENSE BURNER 17th century The body cast in relief with a continuous scene of frothing waves beneath clouds, one side with a dragon fish rising from the waves, the other with an eagle sitting on a rock, all between two bands of floral scroll bordered with raised bands, the base with a recessed circular panel incised with a chi dragon carrying a lingzhzi fungus in its mouth among clouds, wood cover. 15cm (5 7/8in) diam. (2). Footnotes: 十七世紀 銅奩式爐 The eagle symbolises heroic behaviour with the character ying 鹰, a component for yingxiong 英雄 (hero). The carp or liyu 鯉魚 transforming into a dragon long 龍 is associated with the passing of the Imperial civil service examinations, hence forming the pun yutiao longmen 魚跳龍門.
