New York: Harper & Brothers, 1883. 8vo, illustrated. *********************** A PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE'S DAUGHTER-IN-LAW. With autograph letter signed by the author and mounted on front endpaper, and with additional front blank bearing the inscription, "To Mrs. Julian Hawthorne with compliments of W. H. Bishop. New York, Nov. 1st 1883." The author seems to have some rapport with Mrs. Hawthorne as he references their previous conversation at "... Mr. Carnegie's lunch. It is with some difficulty that I refrain from addressing it to Mrs. Swiss Family Hawthorne... I envy your island – I wish you had not mentioned it was a peninsula."
Condition
Publisher's cloth heavily water-stained and faded, contents with marginal water-stains throughout. Sold as-is.
