Description
Adrichom, Christian van. THEATRUM TERRAE SANCTAE ET BIBLICARUM HISTORIARUM. Cologne: Brickmann, 1628 (imprint on colophon.) [12], 286, [30] pp., including engraved title, + 12 maps: including a large folding map of the Promised Land, a large folding plan of Jerusalem (detached, laid in), and 10 double-page regional maps. Bound in period speckled calf boards, rebacked in 20th c. ************* An impressive collection of maps and plans illustrating the Holy Land. The present copy bears the early ownership signature (title, upper corner) of John Marsham – likely Sir John Marsham, 1st Baronet (1602-1685.) In 1629, Marsham was travelling in Holland and Gelderland, and it's possible he may have purchased this book during his visit to the area (given the close proximity to the date and place of this printing.)
Condition
Boards with worn corners and other light wear, front hinge with partial cracks. Occasional light faded water-stains to some margins, mostly to text leaves closer to the end of the book, though one map noted with some corner stains (shown in photos); a couple of the maps lightly toned as are a small number of text leaves on occasion; large folding plan of Jerusalem is detached and laid in at front (with some old paper reinforcement to verso along some creases); map of Ephraim partially trimmed within neatline to fore-edge; occasional light foxing, mostly clean, a good copy overall.
