This sculpture is a cast bronze representation of an abstracted human male torso with head, characterized by indistinct facial features beneath a draped cloth. The piece is finished with a dark bronze patina, accented with tones of white over the head. It is an Artist's Proof (A.P.). The sculpture measures approximately 26 1/2" x 15 1/2" x 9". The signature, date, and edition are incised near the bottom edge on the verso as "De Staebler 1981 AP". This bronze torso is featured on a full page of Stephen De Staebler's book "Matter + Spirit" as plate 74, with attribution to purchaser Robert Hutchinson. Robert Hutchinson was a renowned San Francisco architect and interior designer, who sold this torso to John A. Williams, completing his set. The hardcover book Matter and Spirit: Stephen De Staebler by Timothy Burgard, is included with this lot. This item originates from the estate of John A. Williams, a distinguished philanthropist and renowned collector. Mr. Williams and his partner Dewitt Hart were influential members of San Francisco's art society and were celebrated for their discerning taste in modern, ethnographic, and fine art. Over the years, they hosted numerous exhibitions in their home, showcasing their prestigious collection to appreciative audiences. All proceeds of items from this estate benefit the Hart Williams Rainbow Fund, a nonprofit working with the LGBTQIA+ community in the San Francisco Bay Area.
