WHITING MFG. CO. REPOUSSE AND CHASED PRESENTATION LARGE HANDLED VASE, tapered-form well with flared rim, two scrolled handles, and gold-washed interior, raised on a domed foot, sides having repousse and chased decoration of grapevines framing reserves with presentation engraving, one side reads "PRESENTED TO / Samuel W Tomlinson Supt. / BY THE / Troy N.Y. Agency Staff / OF THE / John Hancock Mutual Life Ins. Co. / JAN 9TH 1908", the reverse with "IN HONOR / of his leadership / among all agencies of the Company / during the year / 1907". Base impressed with maker's mark above "STERLING / 382A / 9 PINTS" and a 1907 date mark. Total weight: 34.85 ozt. Whiting Mfg. Co., North Attleboro, MA (active 1866-1875), New York City, NY (1876-1909), and Bridgeport, CT (1909-1926). Circa 1907. 12 3/8" HOA, 6 3/8" D rim.
Catalogue Note: Samuel Watson Tomlinson (1866-1925) was born in Carrigaline Townland, County Cork, Ireland to parents Samuel Watson Tomlinson (1823-1911) and Frances Morgan Smith Kirkland (1833-1872). Samuel immigrated to the United States around 1886 and settled in Troy, New York by the time he married Alice Corrigan (1869-1931) in 1889. On the 1900 U.S. census, his occupation is listed as "Supt. Hancock Ins. Co." and appears to remain employed as a Superintendent in the Insurance industry until his death. He is buried at Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, Rensselaer Co., NY along with his wife and some of their children.

Condition
Very good overall condition with minor wear, surface scratches, and nicks, some scattered few minor/small dents, one more moderate dent to lower side of well near lower terminal of one handle, possibly a repair or area of denting to foot, interior with spots of heavy scratching, some loss to gold-washed finish mostly at rim.
