Description

Description: A 19TH CENTURY ITALIAN PIETRE DURE PANEL DEPICTNG A PARROTthe Grand Tour pietra dura panel inlaid with various hard stones such as malachite and lapis lazuli on a black ground, later mounted in a gilt frame, the panel 25cm x 17cm, overall 33cm x 25cmThe earliest examples of Pietre Dure date from the 16th century, when the Florentine Opificio delle Pietre Dure workshop was established by Ferdinand I de'Medici in 1588. Depictions of parrots and other exotic birds became popular in the Pietre Dure works of the 17th century, when a wider variety of hard stones became available and the cutting skills of the stone workers became more precise, allowing them to produce much more detailed and complex compositions. Panels such as the present example were used to ornament large cabinets as well as other pieces furniture, such as the commode by Adam Weisweiler (1744-1820) now in the Royal Collection, Buckingham Palace.
